About
About BEA Bapuji Educational Association was born in 1958 as a brain child of a few visionaries with an intention to impart basic education facilitates to the dominantly rural citizen of Davangere and its surroundings.
Through the efforts of a number of Luminaries and Philanthropists the Association has grown enormously by establishing a chain of educational institutions in almost every discipline from primary to higher education. Anaesthesia
The department of anesthesiology was established way back in 1974 & till date, more than 600 graduates have passed out and are serving in various capacities in India and abroad. At present the department provides anesthesia services to various surgical specialties like General Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatric surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Neuro Surgery etc in various major hospitals like Bapuji Hospital, Chigateri Govt. District Hospital, Child Health Institute and Women & Children’s Hospital. The Department also offers critical care & ventilation services in intensive care units in attached hospitals with dedicated team of Post Graduates and Staff members. Forensic Medicine
The department was established since the beginning of the college in 1965. The department grown up under the able guidance of Dr. A.T.S. IYENGAR from 1969 to 1989. Our department takes up the medico legal work of Davangere, Chithradurga and Shimoga districts.
Microbiology
Department of Microbiology at J.J.M.Medical College is one of most reputed departments in the University. The team of Microbiologists is comprised of 19 staff members – 9 professors, 3 associate professors, 2 assistant professors and 5 technicians. The department has got a proud intake of 6 postgraduate students per year.
The departmental laboratory is well equipped to carry out advanced investigations like Immunofluorescent Microscopy and PCR apart from the routine investigations. The staff and technicians are well trained to fulfill the responsibilities of their expertise for better results.
The staff members are actively involved in both diagnostic and teaching fields. Many of them are guiding postgraduates in their thesis work and some of them are guiding undergraduates in their ICMR projects. Academic activities for both undergraduates and postgraduates are conducted regularly. Regular theory and practical classes as well as internal assessments are conducted without any fail as per the RGUHS guidelines.
Department of Orthopaedics
The Department of Orthopaedics, JJM Medical College, Davnagere, Karnataka, India, is a well established branch. It serves/caters the needs of Urban/Rural population of DavnagereDistrict and its neighbouring districts, Bapuji Hospital and Chigateri District General Hospitals are attached to JJM Medical College for clinical purpose. There are 158 orthopaedics beds are available including both hospitals (i.e.98 beds in Bapuji Hospital and 60 beds in Chigateri General Hospital) distributed among 5 units 30 beds each (i.e. 3 units at Bapuji Hospital and 02 units atChigateri General Hospital.). The Department has fully qualified and experienced faculty members. The MBBS Degree and postgraduate Degree and Diploma are recognized by Rajiv Gandhi University Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, India and also Medical Council of India, New Delhi, postgraduate Diploma and MS Degree in Orthopaedics were stated in the year 1974 & 1978 respectively. The postgraduates passed out from this institution are well settled as consultants, faculty members and orthopaedic practitioners all over India and Abroad. Pharmacology
The Department of Pharmacology, JJM Medical College has experienced and knowledgeable teaching faculty. Postgraduate programme (MD) was started in the year 1976 and since then 46 postgraduates have received their master’s degree. The department has spacious and separate labs for UG and PG teaching, fully equipped with scientific instruments. It also has a Lecture hall and a Seminar Hall with provision for teaching using Blackboard, LCD and Overhead Projection. The Department also maintains an Animal House with facilities for breeding Laboratory animals meant for research. It has always encouraged research- both preclinical and clinical – and is reflected by many publications in reputed journals. The teachers have been role models constantly supporting undergraduates and postgraduates in academic and research activities.
Anatomy
The Department of Anatomy was established in the year 1965. The post-graduate courses to train the candidates for the award of M.S/ M.D in Anatomy Degree was started in the year 1973. The Department is located in the Pre-Clinical block of the college and distributed in Ground floor, First floor and Second floor with total area. There are two separate Dissection theater attached with Embalming room, Cadaver storage tanking and Workshop. There are two separate Histology laboratory attach with Preparation room. There are two Lecture halls with a seating capacity of two hundred each and they are provided with all Audio-Visual facilities including LCD display. Six demonstration rooms are available for conducting demonstration classes in smaller batches. There is a well organised Museum for display and for study purposes and Mounted specimens are with catalogue. Dermatology
The department which was started as a small OPD room is now placed in a well planned , widely spaced area. The department has separate blocks in C.G.Hospital and Bapuji Hospital. At present there are facilities like Phototherapy , Laser Therapy, Radio Frequency, Electric Cautary, Iontophoresis, contact dermatitis clinic, Hair Scanning, Woods lamp. Chemical cautary, Chemical peels, Cryo therapy, Darkground microscopy, LSD projector, Slide projector. There are Seminar rooms at both Bapuji Hospital and C.G. Hospital. Special clinics like leprosy clinic, Pigmentary clinic, STD clinic are seen regularly.
Obstetrics & Gynecology
The department of obstetrics and gynecology was started in the year 1965. Since then it has grown in strength and now we are having a faculty of 30 dedicated teachers. The department is running postgraduate course since 1973-74. The department has got a bed strength of 270 spread among 3 attached hospitals. There are 9 teaching units distributed among the 3 attached hospitals. The out patient attendance daily is 350 to 400. Total number of deliveries per day including Cesarean section, is about 50. We have got a fully dedicated faculty to train the undergraduate and postgraduate students. We have the in house facility of USG, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, Colposcopy to train the postgraduates. We are running cancer clinic, infertility clinic, adolescent and menopausal clinic. MBBS, MS and DGO degrees are recognized by M.C.I. Until now 382 MS Degree students and 425 Diploma students have successfully passed out from this institution.
Pediatrics
Department of Pediatrics was started in the year 1969 under the leader ship of Dr.Nirmala Kesaree, who was also the first Head of the Department of Pediatrics. She served as Head of the department till the year 1994. She took over as director of Bapuji Child Health Institute and continues to work in that capacity. Professor Dr.M.L.Kulkarni took over as Head of the department in the year 1994 and served the department till December – 2011.Professor Dr.C.R.Banapurmath took charge as Head of the department from January 2012. Admission for Postgraduate studies in the department was started in the year 1973-74. Till date, 668 students have completed postgraduate courses from our department and serving the needy children across the world. Among them 294 candidates have Masters Degree & 374 candidates have Diploma in Child Health.
Physiology
Department of Physiology is a preclinical department and was established for training Undergraduate medical students at JJM Medical College, Davangere. The Department of Physiology has a long tradition of excellence in teaching Physiology to medical, dental and nursing students at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. Physiology is a science in its own right however, the training program for Undergraduate training is designed to emphasize those aspects of the subject which will throw light upon normal functions and disorders, therefore, give the student a vantage point from which he may gain a rational view of pathological processes. The Department has spacious Theory lecture galleries and modern, fully equipped laboratories devoted to the study of Hematology, Clinical and Experimental Physiology for practical training. Departmental library has good number of books and journals to enable one to keep abreast with recent advances in the subject. Department is adequately staffed so that personal attention is given to students. The teaching programme includes Theory lectures, Practical work, Seminars, tutorials and periodical assessment of the students. Biochemistry
Department of Biochemistry headed by Dr.Manjunath M.Tembad, has total number of 8 Professors, and 3 Associate Professors. We teach to MBBS, MD(Biochemistry), BDS & B.Sc. Nursing courses.Our department has 8 postgraduate seats per year. We have a well equipped Central Research Laboratory (CRL) in our department. Special investigations such as Hormone Assays like Thyroid Profile, Fertility Profile, PSA etc. along with fully automated electrophoresis of Serum and Hemoglobin are done in CRL. Our faculty guides our students and those from other departments for their research activities. We also manage a modernized Central Diagnostic Centre of our Hospital. Our faculty members are very much involved in research activities, which are published in various journals.
ENT
The Department was started functioning since 1968 under the able guidance of Late: Professor Dr. K. Veeranna, Since then it has been constantly going as one of the Prestigious department with addition of modern Equipments. The department was further Up-Graded as per the requirement by Dr. M. Shankar, Dr. S.M. Siddalingappa and is presently headed by Dr. K. V. Lokanath. The Faculty Members have updated themselves with present Sceinario and implemented effectively, especially Vertigo & Head-Ache Clinic. At present the Department is being managed by 3 Units with regular & innovative Teachings both Undergraduates & Postgraduates. Regular Health Checkup Camps have been conducted and the required treatment is Ear-Mark in Bapuji Hospital and Chigateri District Hospital. Teaching Hospitals attached to the College. These Hospitals are well Equipped to provide the treatment. The Department has conducted 3 State Conferences, Regular CME & Workshops have been conducted. Ophthalmology
The Department Ophthalmology has grown as an integral part of the prestigious institute of medical sicences over many decades. It has appended state of the art equipments. Faculty members have updated their skills in different subspecialties, as a part the institute’s skill enhancement strategies. New faculty members have joined hands after completing fellowships in defferent subspecialties. Undergraduate teaching is facilitated by didactic lectures, interactive tutorials, case discussions, CCTV viewing of live surgeries etc. The post gradate courses were initiated in the year 1973. Scores of new generations of ophthalmologists have emerged who have brought fame and name to this great institute and the profession. Subspecialty clinics have been started in fields like cornea, squint,glaucoma, vitreoretinal surgery, oculoplasty, phacoemulsificationetc, manned by qualified personnel. Regular base hospital eye camp surgeries are conducted reaching out to the rural population and economically weaker sections of the society. The Department utilizes clinical facilities of two large teaching hospital in the city, namely Chigateri General Hospital and Bapuji Hospital with a total of 120 beds earmarked for ophthalmology, 60 in each hospital. Academic excellence is persued by conducting seminars CMEs and sate conferences. Pathology
The department of pathology, started in 1964 comprises of histopathology, cytopathology , hematology , Central lab and Blood bank. Ancillary investigations like immunohistochemistry , immunofluroscense, and frozen sections are provided by the department. Rare and classical specimens received at the department have been archived with system wise categorization at the Museum in the department. The department has diagnostic and teaching responsibilities. It is well equipped for both undergraduate and Postgraduate training. The teaching staff undertake teaching programmes for undergraduate, postgraduate (MD & DCP Courses) as well as Paramedical Courses. We have a well equipped practical hall for undergraduate students . Psychiatry
J.J.M. Medical College was started in 1978, with Dr K Nagaraj Rao as Head of the Department. At present there are two Professors of Psychiatry, one Associate Professor, one Assistant Professor, one Tutor and one Professor of Clinical Psychology, The department provides clinical services to Bapuji hospital (40 beds) and Chigateri General Hospital(30 beds). Apart from daily Out patient services, Special clinics for De-addiction , Epilepsy, Mental retardation & Dyslexia, Child guidance and Sexual disorders are operated. Electroconvulsive therapy , Psychotherapy and Counseling services are provided. The department was recognized for Post graduate courses in M.D. and Diploma in the year 2003. The department of general surgery was established at the inception of J.J.M. Medical College, Davangere which is one of the oldest and premier medical institutes in the country. It has been training both the under-graduate and post-graduate students in learning and perfecting the art of Surgery as well as advanced techniques. Library and Information Center
It is situated on the III and IV Floor of Bapuji OPD Block. The Library & Information Centre has vast area which accommodates 1500 readers at a time. Separate reference areas for faculty, postgraduate and undergraduate students has been provided. Personal book reading sections are made available.
S.S. Digital Library is the latest addition to the center providing Internet facilities with V-SAT connectivity and 25 terminals for the users.
The central Audio-Visual and photography department comes under the Library & Information Centre. It has facilities for Multimedia Projection, Slides and Overhead Projects. It has 04 qualified artists & photographers. This section meets the needs of all the departments.
The Library & Information Center has a total collection of 26,008 books, 12,372 back and bound volumes. It subscribes for 302 current periodicals. The department is headed by Dr. P.S.Mahesh(Ph.D), with more than 25 years of experience and assisted by 05 Assistant Librarians, 08 Library Assistants and 18 Assistants. It renders Computerized MEDLINE Search Service, bibliographical, SDI and CAS Services to the users.
